The Uninorte Language Institute follows a communicative approach to optimize the teaching of languages.

    Why Spanish in Barranquilla?

    Barranquilla is an industrial center, and a Caribbean seaport. It is centered between Santa Marta and Cartagena: beautiful colonial sites enriched with Spanish traditions, history, and attractive beaches. Barranquilla, is better known for its festive ambiance as well as the happiness and friendliness of its people. This city offers tourists a good amount of contrasts such as the beautiful beaches of Puerto Velero and Cano Dulce, the Luruaco and Totumo swamps and the fabulous Carnaval de Barranquilla.

    With a population of over 1,400,000, Barranquilla features the atmosphere of a big city along with the hospitality of a small town. Our city offers theatrical productions, a symphony orchestra, art galleries, movie theaters, malls, restaurants, clubs, bars, and sporting events.

  • Highlights

    The Spanish Program for International Students has been offered for more than 10 years. Students from countries such as Germany, United States, England, West Indies, Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands have participated in the courses. The Program offers multidisciplinary courses with a variety of social and cultural activities. Some activities include visits to museums, art exhibits, and trips to historic places in Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta.

    The Program is structured in different levels to enhance the acquisition of linguistic and grammatical aspects of Spanish and the familiarization of the most relevant aspects of the Caribbean culture. In addition, students have the opportunity to practice their speaking skills with a native Spanish-speaking student (tutor) of the University while learning more about the regional Caribbean culture.

    General objectives
    – To develop the four main skills of the language: listening comprehension, oral expression, reading comprehension and written expression.
    – To provide students with communicative tools required to understand and appreciate the socio-cultural representations of the Caribbean region.

    Courses and levels

    The Program is structured based on the Common European Framework (CEF) as a reference to provide the student with a solid foundation for Spanish language learning.

    *Regular Courses
    Class hours and schedule are based on students needs and interests.

    *Immersion Courses
    The immersion courses are offered throughout the year in 4 weeks intervals. Classes are Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 1:00 pm. Cultural activities are scheduled in the afternoons.

    Complementary services
    – Plan Padrino
    The international students are paired with Uninorte students during the course. This Padrino provides international students a great opportunity to practice Spanish in informal surroundings encouraging them to take advantage of everything the city has to offer.

    – Extracurricular Activities
    The Program schedules visits to museums, historical places in Barranquilla and its surroundings, schools, companies, the zoo, and art exhibits. The Program also takes students to visit towns such as the Municipio of Usiacuri, and to visit the historical cities of Cartagena and Santa Marta where student will have the opportunity to learn about the history and customs of the Caribbean region of Colombia.

    – Volunteer Work
    International students will have the opportunity to participate in the Univoluntarios Program. This Program offers options of volunteering in the areas of teaching a second language to children and adults in vulnerable areas and training these communities how to take care of the environment.
